Nyepi Day, also known as the “Day of Silence,” is a Hindu festival that is celebrated annually in Bali, Indonesia. It is a day of self-reflection and fasting, and is considered the most important holiday on the Balinese calendar. On Nyepi Day, all lights and fires must be put out, and no one is allowed to leave their homes, work, or use any kind of entertainment or communication devices, like TV, phone, internet, etc. The streets are empty, and even the airport is closed for 24 hours. The purpose of this is to create a complete stillness and silence throughout the island, allowing for a time of spiritual and physical rest. Nyepi Day is also a time for self-purification and self-control, and many Balinese Hindus will fast, meditate, and perform self-sacrifice rituals.
